Hope Emerging

This isn’t a new project, but I’d like to share about my experience with this oil painting. I created this in the living room of my wife’s and my little apartment in West Hollywood years ago. I displayed it in my home and various exhibitions. But I never wanted to part with it. During a couple of times of moving homes, this pieces ended up being stored away — for years. Then, as I was getting ready for one of my final shows in Burbank, California, I, for some reason, decided to pull this piece out again.

During the show, a woman stood quietly, motionlessly in front of it for some time. I stepped up next to her and offered a greeting. She said she didn’t know why this piece captured her. I told her the titled of the piece, “Hope Emerging.” She started to cry and said, “Okay, now this piece speaks to me even more.” I ended up selling the piece to her. I didn’t sell it to her for very much, but it’s one of the more meaningful sales I made. I talked for a bit more and shared a little more about the artwork. I never learned what was going on in her life, but this piece meant a lot to her and did something to her spirit. So, the project was the journey of this piece from creation, showing and saving it, storing it, to showing and selling it to person who was blessed by it.

In Hope Emerging, the colors are a blend of grace, goodness and glory. The yellowish square is a hint of God’s glory emerging out of the darkness with clouds of grace. This oil painting is 24×18 inches on a gallery wrapped, 2-inch deep canvas.

When times are hard and dark, hope might not be blaring but it may be emerging.
